What began as a passion project in 2010 has grown into a full home-furnishing brand with two showrooms, a curated mix of indoor and outdoor furniture, accessories, rugs, window treatments, awnings, and our very own line of custom-manufactured pieces. Today, Blufish also includes a full-service interior design studio, bringing our coastal-inspired approach to homes throughout South Jersey and beyond.

In 2010, Blufish Designs opened its very first doors at 2418 Dune Drive in Avalon, New Jersey—marking the start of a coastal-inspired brand rooted in thoughtful design and timeless style.

Co-owners Eileen LaPenta and Whitney Kotzman opened Blufish as a passion project—creating a space that brought Whitney’s creative vision to life and set the foundation for everything the brand would become.

Early on, Blufish introduced its own line of customizable, beach-inspired furniture—pairing whimsical design with thoughtful craftsmanship. From free in-house consultations to personalized guidance, exceptional service was part of the brand’s DNA from the very start.

Whitney designed the first iterations of Blufish furniture, brought to life by master European craftsmen in Pennsylvania. That commitment to quality, artistry, and thoughtful construction continues to define the brand today.

As the indoor furniture line gained momentum, Blufish naturally expanded into outdoor living—bringing the same design sensibility, craftsmanship, and attention to detail beyond the home and into open-air spaces.

As Blufish expanded into outdoor furnishings, Eileen’s deep knowledge of materials and space planning became the guiding force—ensuring every open-air design reflected the same thoughtfulness and integrity as the brand’s interiors.

Blufish Designs became the first retail destination on Seven Mile Island to prominently showcase outdoor furniture—setting a new standard for coastal living and quickly redefining how the community designed open-air spaces.

The early success of outdoor furniture at Blufish Designs in Avalon revealed something bigger—paving the way for future projects, expanded offerings, and the next chapter of Blufish locations.

In 2016, Blufish Designs expanded beyond Avalon with the opening of its outlet location in Cape May Court House—marking a new chapter of growth and a broader reach for the brand.

With its expanded footprint, the Outlet location introduced a more immediate, cash-and-carry experience—giving customers access to a broader range of offerings while maintaining the same thoughtful design and quality.

By 2016, Blufish Designs trucks were delivering throughout the tri-state area—spreading the brand’s reach far beyond Avalon, with brightly colored Polywood Adirondack chairs becoming a signature sight along the way.

With the opening of the Blufish Designs Outlet, valuable showroom space was freed up in Avalon—allowing for new displays, expanded collections, and a more immersive in-store experience.

In 2018, Blufish Designs opened its third location in Stone Harbor—introducing a more intimate, boutique-style environment while staying true to the brand’s thoughtful, design-driven approach.

To distinguish the Stone Harbor location from the flagship Avalon store, select brands and manufacturers were thoughtfully introduced—while the Blufish Designs collection remained at the core, refined with a more elevated, less whimsical aesthetic.

In 2018, Blufish Designs welcomed Will Schneller as General Manager—bringing new leadership to support the brand’s continued growth while preserving the culture, creativity, and values at its core.

With his deep industry knowledge and expertise in visual merchandising and retail, Will helped elevate every aspect of the business—sharpening Blufish’s identity and guiding its evolution in the years that followed.

In 2019, Blufish relocated its flagship store to a prominent corner at 2021 Dune Drive—positioning the brand at the heart of downtown Avalon and marking an exciting new chapter in its story.

The new Dune Drive location transformed the showroom—filling it with natural light and expanding the floorplan to showcase Blufish’s growing collection of indoor and outdoor furnishings.

Blufish entered its next phase with the addition of Will Schneller as co-owner, joining original founders Eileen LaPenta and Whitney Kotzman in guiding the brand’s future with shared vision and purpose.

Shortly after the flagship moved to its expanded home, the former outlet location was reimagined as Blufish Outdoor—creating a dedicated space to deepen the brand’s focus on open-air living and outdoor design.

In 2021, the Blufish interior design team moved into its own dedicated space in Sea Isle City—marking an important step in the growth of the studio and its ability to serve clients with greater focus and intention.

Designed by Principal Designer Sara Mass, the new space on 42nd Street marked Blufish’s expansion into another shore community—extending the brand’s design perspective and growing its presence along the coast.

In Fall 2022, Blufish unveiled Blufish Home in Cape May Court House—introducing an expansive showroom and on-site design center that united indoor and outdoor living under one thoughtfully curated roof.

Alongside the opening of Blufish Home, the brand’s operational center moved on-site in Cape May Court House—bringing together the Delivery Team, Purchasing, Customer Service, Design Consultants, and leadership under one roof to support every aspect of the client experience.

In Spring 2024, Blufish Interiors evolved into Studio Blu Interiors and opened its doors at 2905 Dune Drive in Avalon—marking a renewed identity and a dedicated home for the brand’s full-service design studio.

In early 2025, the flagship relocated to 2320 Dune Drive in downtown Avalon, embracing the simplified name BLUFISH. The move brought the brand into a larger showroom—honoring its roots while stepping confidently into its next chapter.
